A call to arms for the SCA fencers of An Tir - at least the ones close enough to Peace River Alberta
If you are able to travel up to Peace River on Saturday the 12th of July and assist us in our first demo (we are looking to start a new group centred in Peace River and Peace Fest is a huge recruiting opportunity) we would be most grateful and you will also have a good time. Come up to the north and we will show you a good time eh ;-)
Amazing accomodation deals offered by one of our members or you can pitch a tent on my quarter section (see below for details)
Should you be able to make it then email me at rapier@dodo.com.au
We have had positive responses from the Vinjar Fencers but the more the merrier
Yours in Service
Ancient Guildmaster of Fence Edmund the Lame Rapier Champion of Vinjar (Paul Sawtell)
Below is the message that was sent out on the Vinjar List today so apologies for the late notice
We are planning to do a demo during Peace Fest ( http://www.peacefest.com/ ) between 2-6 pm on Sat July 12. We should have a tent provided by the festival, we have arranged for tables as well. Water and pop will be provided. We are planning on setting up an eric for fighting, and alternating between heavy and rapier as seems best to the fighters and marshalls in attendance. For those who are considering coming up and helping, what we would love to see is heavy fighters (Roa and Raoul need someone to play with!), rapier fighters (Edmund needs someone to play with!), archery equipment (for display only), heraldic shields and banners, A&S (anything you feel comfortable putting out on a display table*), Medieval European dancing** (if we have enough people to do dances in the eric between bouts, without having to teach them), some really spiff feast gear if anyone's got some they'd like to display, and anything else that's good for display that I may have forgotten (it's been a few years since I did a demo). *Because we will be in an area open to the public for free, there is a possibilty of a VERY large number of people coming through our area. We CANNOT guarantee the safety of the display items, though the more of us who are there to sit by the tables (in the tent shade!), the better an eye we can keep on stuff. For this reason, we have also decided to make it a policy for this year alone, not to have any items for sale at the demo. The tables will be heavily signed to this effect. We will reconsider this policy next year when we are more familiar with the venue and what we can expect at it. Artisans, etc. are welcome to put out business cards with their work or make arrangements privately with interested attendees to sell items. **There is no graceful way to bring this up: we're in the heart of Hutterite country, and we don't want the SCA's first local impression to be misinterpreted. We respectfully request gentles wear their more conservative garb. We're honestly not sure if things like codpieces, low-cut/under-boob bodices, and revealing belly dancing costumes would help or harm our membership drive (which is one of the main purposes of this demo). This will also be reconsidered next year. We would also like to ask a favour. We do not currently have stands, ropes or pennants for an eric. Is it possible to borrow an eric from the group or an individual? We will try to fix something up of our own if necessary, but recognize that it probably won't be pretty. We decided to stop the demo at 6:00 pm as this is when people start wandering off for dinner and the doors open on the (paid) concert venue. Those interested in attending the concerts, the listings and contact for tickets are available at the link above. For those who would like to stay longer, either for the concerts or just to hang out, and are considering the idea of staying in town overnight, Roa has blocked off 10 double rooms at the Best Canadian Motor Inn ( www.bestcdn.com 780-624-2586 ) at $50 a night (if you reserve by Fri the 11th) under the Group Block name "SCA-Paul Hebert". Edmund has also offered his land for anyone who would prefer to pitch a tent for the night (bathroom facilities will be made available). Please let us know if you are hoping/planning to attend, and what you can bring/demo so we have some idea of what we may have available to show and how many tables we need. Again, apologies for the delay in getting this info out. Brígiða Vadesbana (Brighid Anraith) http://ooo-shiiiny.livejournal.com/
