07/26/2006 12:10 AM Alert
Greetings to all. I would like to sponsor a rapier forum again this year, and would like to start taking discussion topics. Also, I would like to know if anyone would like to help by serving tea, or bringing some refreshments. I have recently enlisted into the US Army Reserve and will be accepting a commission as a 2nd LT, so I don't know what kind of spare time I'll have, but I should be able to attend the crown event, but any help would be greatly appriciated. So, if you have any ideas, please post them in response, or you may email me off line at hsmcrory@aol.com. If anyone would like to be annonomous in their discussion topic sugestion, I will be sure to honor that. Thanks, and I look forward to another forum and tea! Samauel.

My personal thought is that any meeting of this sort needs some sort of fixed agenda. It might be a good idea to solicit topics for discussion for the next couple of weeks then publish some sort of agenda.

I don't want to sound like Capt. Obvious, but how else would you suggest I solicit folks for topics?  I have been asking everyone I see, but I don't see everyone.

This is a fine way to get topics, but don't leave it open until site opens for Crown. Close it a week or two ahead of time and publish the list of topics for discussion. Otherwise it will end up as a ramble-fest and really won't serve any purpose.

OK, first topic "How long should it take to get topics?" Honestly, it could change up until and even durring the event, so I don't even know if there should be "Cut off" time for topics. It would be ideal if we have enough to post ahead of time sure, but this is the SCA, and and all...

Like I said...either there are topics to discuss or it will be a ramble-fest.

Samauel...since you are spearheading this, just decide one way or another, and if you don't get any discussion points apparently we don't need to have one.

I'm all for leaving it open for topic submissions until a week beforehand, then post em'.  That way everyone knows what topics to gather their thoughts on for the discussion of those specific topics.

I have to agree with the masses on this one.  OK, Simon and Tora at least.

Without a set agenda of items to discuss, we will find ourselves at the end wondering what we just spent our time doing.  Personally, I also feel that the discussion needs to be coordinated/organized a little better than last time as well.

We kept flitting from topic to topic, and missing people for so long that by the time they were called upon, what they were replying to was almost forgotten at times...

Well if they are out/ready at that time I think we should discuss the rule changes.

Actually - I was thinking this should be a separate occurrence. Might take longer

How about we start by discussing the issues, and results, of the last forum and tea?

Prudence. Temperance. Fortitude. Justice.

Well then if we're looking for topics I should likely give some.

1) Rapier Blades: which ones aren't legal that should be, and which ones are legal that shouldn't be
2) Marshalate: Are there any ways in which we can ensure proper adherence to the rules by the marshalate including communication, and not being afraid to say "no" to equipment.
3) The future of Cut and Thrust: two separate types of rapier, unified rule-sets, or replacing one with the other?
4) Enforced periodocity: how far do we want the rules to go in restricting what is and isn't allowed on the field
5) Marshalate names: Marshal of fence, Master of Blades, or what?

I may be at september crown, but it will likely only be day tripping.

Do we have to?  Havent we already run this into the ground enough?  ;)

Separate.  No choice, that is mandated from Society level.

All the way baby!  Unless you were born in 1570, I dont want to see you on the field!

Seriously though, I second this topic.

Hell - call yourself Master Chicken Slicer if you want, it does not make any difference to me.

How3ever, officially, the only "recognized" names for Rapier Marshals are:

Rapier Marshal
Provost Marshal for Rapier  (this is in the An Tir Laws)

I'll third item 4. What ever gets discussed is likely to draw fire, but at some point we do need to have periodocity.

There is some good feedback here. Thanks for everyone that posted. I think that Prospare had a list of topics, so if he still has them (I have no idea where mine are), we can start from there, like an "Old business" approach.

I like all 5 topics that were brought up by Tomas. We don't need to have a seperate in depth discussion over the new rules in my opinion. This might not be a bad time and place to just go over them. Also, not a bad time to go over the new Cut and Thrust rules too. Some people just do better when these are presented verbaly.

Prospare is the mediator, and I would give him final say over what shape the discussion should take. The intent of this get together isn't to change rules, but it is a good time to take a pulse, as it were. Not everyone is a net hound and some do better face to face with these sorts of things. Not to meantion that this is open to anyone who supports what we do, and they may not always be reading these posts.

I would also like to add another topic: New recruits. We need them, how are other people getting them. Maybe share some ideas about that and what works best, what doesn't.

Oh, one other thing...

I have noted that Scott from Darkwood has his own sword out. Is this to mean that the Del Tin blades are not in use? If so, how is the existing availablity of stock out there?

oh oh oh...

And another. Should we entertain new titles? There has been some movement out there for this. What's the take on this?

Some people still have Del Tins. Darkwood has had his blade out for a couple of years now....

Entertain new titles? What do you mean by titles?
