A warrior is he or she that takes up arms and other tools to perform the necessary evils that allow others to live peaceful productive lives.

OK Mathieu - now compare a warrior to a soldier.

A soldier is a type of warrior... Are trying to argue semantics?

Is it arguing semantics to discuss the differences between an apple and an orange?

A Warrior CAN be a Soldier
A Soldier CAN be a Warrior
But they are not the same thing

An Tir (especially in the Armored Community) is fairly thick with Warriors. Some of the best warriors you could ever hope to find. But that does not make them soldiers. There are many distinctions between the two, but let's just start with what some feel to be the most obvious. And it can be summed up with a simple four letter word. Team.

A warrior is he or she who battles against an adversary, or makes war, with or without arms, (thou legs are helpful). There are many battles presented in life and on the field, weapons do not make a warrior. A solider fights for a country or government generally they would be paid or compensated. I suppose you might say that a warrior fights for their own cause and a soldier fights for someone else's cause. Lasairiona

I'll take another shot at it:

A warrior is someone who's profession is warfare.

A soldier is someone who's occupation is warfare.

To put it a different way:

A warrior is the kind of person who goes out to single-handedly fight the enemy and win the day.

A soldier is someone who works with a team to fight the enemy, preferably keeping self and teammates alive, and accomplish the objective.

From a sort of new-agey perspective:

A warrior is someone on a spiritual path that holds as a central characteristic the notion of life as a spiritual struggle. A secondary characteristic is a devotion to following their own conscience and pursuit of individual liberty.

A soldier is someone who follows authority, wants to stay in the group, conforms to norms of behavior, and serves the interests of others.

I don't really care for the new-agey perspective anymore. Metaphors are nice and useful, but they can just as easily get in the way, especially if you self-identify with one. A balanced, sane spiritual life requires everyone to take turns being warriors, soldiers, farmers, hunters, priests, kings, barflies, and idiots. Especially idiots. I do that one a lot.

See if I can liven this up a bit

A warrior is a practically prehistoric concept.  It went out when the Greeks introduced the phalanx.  Of course there were plenty of tribes who stuck with the concept (Celts mostly, to their woe).  Warriors die bloody deaths and are selfish, self-centred attention whores.

I am sure that Gichin Funakoshi 1868-1957 would have disagreed.

Since this medium does not allow us to read body language or vocal tone, I think I need clarification.  When you describe warriors as self-centered attention whores, were you trying to be facetious?

How about...

Pick up a weapon, use it, and your are a warrior.

Be told to pick up a weapon, use it with training, and you are a soldier.

My view has always been that a warrior fights for personal glory. A soldier fights to accomplish the mission.

Another way to look at it is that w warrior fignts alone while a soldier fights as a team.

During an ROTC formation my detachment commander asked me, almost rhetorically, if I was a warrior.  I replied, "No sir, I'm a soldier.  That's like a warrior, only smarter."

Man, I used to love messing with his head.

Yes, mostly facetious. I was just trolling but no one was biting. I like to think of myself as a warrior, but until the blunts come off it's really moot - I'll never know if I am or not.
