Hi!  I've been away from the rapier scene in the North West for a few years now (but now I'm way out in Saskatachewan) and I'm wondering if it's still as much fun as it used to be back home.  The discussions I have followed here and elsewhere for the past while seem to be mostly rules oriented, or an announcement about an event, but little "woo-hoo!" type of commentary.  Has it really become that dry?

Please say it isn't so!

Rapier is always fun. It all depends on finding the right group of people to play with.

Speaking of which, where are you in Saskatchewan? We have a fairly active group here in Saskatoon, but the rapier community (and the SCA in general) is almost non-existant in Regina. Moose Jaw has a small group, but they don't practice very often. If you're in our neck of the woods, come out and say hi!

btw, SK isn't really THAT far from Core. We still make a couple trips a year.

You're actually going to pick up your sword again?  OMG.  Moved to Sask?  You lose a bet?

We save the woo hoo's for on the field.  More dramatic that way.

Didn't lose a bet - won a fortune (grin).  Escaped, you might say.

As for picking up a sword, I can honestly say that just over a week ago I found my old fiberglass in a box (kept for nostalgia) and left it in a clever place out of the way where it leapt out and tripped my husband.  All on it's own.  So I got to thinking about the good old days (fencing, not tripping my husband) and even those whippy fence post things, and went looking online to see what was up and voila, here was this forum (and even some old Crimson Star stuff showed up via Google).

As for the rest of my kit, who knows.  The movers packed everything and I am playing 'find the treasure' on a daily basis.

We're down in Swift Current area, which has proven to appear convenient to everything when one looks at a map, but is, in fact, blissfully independent, ie, just far enough away from everything that you make do with what you have because it's just a slightly annoying distance to travel to the next major center (no offence to anyone from Sask reading this, please, but I just left the lower mainland of BC and will eventually adjust).   So, that logic in mind, going to an event won't just be a hop, skip and a jump anymore!

Speaking of which, can anyone mention events that happen over in this neck of the woods?  They don't need to be rapier events, I still have Norse garb in a few boxes somewhere.

But why save the woo hoo's for just on the field?  Are they over that quickly now?

Missing all of you, and hoping to meet the new fencers some day,
Elizabeth

Lose a bet? More like won the lottery!

As for events, we do have them, just like the rest of An Tir! We have a local event upcoming in Myrgan Wood (Saskatoon, SK) the weekend of the 29th of March. It's probably the best you're likely to find for a rapier turnout in Saskatchewan, as it's our Baronial Champion's tournament, and draws a good crowd. There's also Winter War April 4th-6th, in Edmonton, which is fantastic. More long term, there's Quad War July 31st - August 4th, which is the premiere event in Avacal and draws all the fancy people. I think we've even convinced a few from Tir Righ to make the long trip this year.

I agree with the lottery thing.  It's great here!  There's this wierd thing in the sky in winter called the "sun".  All those from the West Coast should take note of this phenomenon.

The events sound like fun, and I hope at least one will work out timing-wise.  However, when you say "fancy people", do you mean the well dressed cavalier variety, or the ones who accidentally won a tournament and wound up having people bow to them?  If it's the former, then I need to make sure I pack accordingly.  If the latter, I see less need for six changes of garb per day (yes, I'm one of those!)

Who might come from Tir Righ?  (Hi to all from Tir Righ!)

Aside to Godfrey:  see, I didn't lose a bet!  Sunshine . . . blue sky . . .  mmmmmm

It was a bad choice of words. Quad War is more about fun and fighting than any other event I've been to, including Pennsic. Nice cavalier garb is totally unnecessary, but a couple of fighting shirts might be a good choice.

Tir Righ participation is mostly rumors at this point, and could be related to how much the pot gets stirred at the new war we have planned for this year.

New war?  Hmmm, sounds good.

But I'm all out of fighting garb  . . . I think.  I'd need to double check the rules, which have no doubt been revised 22 times since I last did stuff up.

I heard about Cut and Thrust becoming official . . . are any Avacal groups participating?

There are not. We have one authorized marshal, I believe, but no groups are currently playing with it.

you'd get more from Tir Righ if you didn't conflict with Clinton War. I'd love to come check it out...but to give up Clinton war....

Ah well, then.  Not that I had the time, but one can dream . . .

Still, good to hear there are a few events I can plan for (Clinton is a tad far these days).  I hope to see you there, Guillemin.  And you too, Godfrey!!

You guys at Clinton would get more from Avacal if you didn't conflict with Quad!

And the cycle continues...

Godfrey!  I just looked noticed from your post that you're a Don!

Congratulations!

When did this happen (wow, am I out of the loop)?
