Wow, when I look at one of those, all I see is a beautiful blade and, unfortunately, a full year of school. Or two.
$5500 for a main gauche. You are evil. |

In my case it's main gauche, $5500, or trip to Paris in Sept. Of course, we're going to Paris instead of rebuilding the garage, so I already have my priorities skewed somewhat.

Re your trip to Paris . Do make sure you go into "Hotel des Invalides" Where Napoelon's tomb is. they have an amazing armory. And if you can find the catacombs I recommend a visit, unless you're claustrophobic or really don;t like to see human bones.
Have fun you'll enjoy it.
Priorities sound fine to me.. Lasairiona |

| I did both the first time I was there (lived just outside of Paris when I was 18). I'm going to pass on the Catacombs this time, but Les Invalides is a must. Especially the chapel with all the battle flags. |

Yeah my last trip I filled a data card on my camera with pictures in Les invalides, but since tripods were not allowed only about 1/4 were any good. This time I'm brining a monpod and I'm going to get better pics.

| As long as we're hurting ourselves looking at things we can't afford, I recommend:
Hermann Historica
Look under "Recent Auctions" in the side bar and then choose the auction with "arms and armor". They also have nice early firearms if such things excite you.

lol. I have Disneyland in August, and England during my sabatical next June (paid sabatical, plus I still get my regular 25 days PTO, yes I know, I suck. lol)...plus I have been coveting an STI Racegun (Trubor Grandmaster...a slightly scary $3300) plus a host of other things before I would consider a $5500 dagger that I can't even hit my friends with.

Interestingly, they list this one (CAR5) as a "Spanish Rapier":
I'm not a professional appraiser, but some things leap out and scream "Italian" about this hilt. The cup is deep, the grip is long, and--most damning--the pommel is way too elongated to be Spanish. Also a potential clue is that it has no rompa punta (whose spelling I may have mangled), the rolled edge that acts as a "point breaker" around the periphery of the cup.
There is also something about this sword that makes me think "Victorian repro" but I can't pinpoint what it is, so you may feel free to dismiss me as a crack smoker on that point.
An example of something more Spanish from the same period:

Hmmmm, it'd be nice to see if there're any maker's marks on it...

Interesting.... Never seen those particular marks before... But that doesn't mean anything. There's a lot of marks I haven't seen...
