All, I have been looking at the ZWA tunics as a possibility for protective gear to be used by students at Old World Martial Arts.  I am also in a back and forth email disucssion with ZWA about this concept, and looking at what might be available there.

To help me in this endeavour, I am asking anyone who has a perception or opinion (heh) on this item to please reply to this thread, and let me know what you do or do not like about the "jackets".

Thanks!

Hi Justin,
I have one I use for my personal use and the Barony of 3M has two more that I purchased for their loaner gear. They are a good weight and good cut, do not inhibit movement any more than necessary, and you can order them in colours (so if you have Academy colours or just want something other than white).
The only complaint I have about them is that they are velcro closure. I did see a pair at 4W that had their velcro removed and replaced with snaps.

I own a few that I used originally and that my younger ones also used, They are now in baronial loaner gear. They are solid, comfotable (mostly) have a decent amount of padding and arent overly heavy.

I dont like the neck since it interferes with the gorget a bit and makes it kind of an uncomfotable juggling act to decide if the neck needs to go in the gorget or get crushed down under it or whatever. But this is a minor issue that with regular use gets sorted out.

I had one that started to lose the velcro closure and had to be re stitched but it was minor. and the item had gotten alot of use by that time.

Other than the couple things listed I think they are a great loaner/starter peice of gear and can be used for a long time as practice gear.

I would echo many of the same thoughts already brought up here.  The ZWA tunics are great for practices, great for loaner gear, and give good coverage, pretty good mobility.  Nice for a starting point, but a serious fighter will want to move into more "fancy" gear quickly.  The arms on mine were far too long when I got it, but that was easily mended.  I've had mine for over four years and it's still in great shape.

One drawback, though...they are hotter than hell in the sun!!  I found that mine doesn't breathe very well, and although the velcro closure makes for a quick "open up and cool down," the plastic chest protector that I wear sweats like crazy underneath the tunic.

I really like mine. It works great for practice, it's nice not to have to ruin garb that I've work hard on with the extra abuse. The velcro does not bother me as it is only for practice. And mine is still in good shape. Lasairiona

Don Magnus uses one, and he has ordered one for me, and some other people for use in his school in Olympia. He has mentioned the heat factor. but seems to like it fine.

I plan to pick up a couple of these very shortly for my husband and I.  I just don't have time to make armor and we would like to resume our practicing.  I gather from the discussions that these are SCA legal for AnTir?  We are looking at the Tunic style rather than the undergarment.  We'll probably pick up the fencing hoods as well.  I would also appreciate hearing others thoughts on these.

I've used both over the years.

The hoods are pretty good, with a velcro fastening under the chin which makes getting it on and off pretty easy.

The tunic can get pretty warm, especially during an open tournament in July. It looks bit tacky, but the protection is fine.

I prefer using a short sleeved spectra jacket under a period shirt. The spectra breathes a lot better than the multi layer canvas and it allows a bit more flexability with the fencing gear.
