| So, I'm figting my Man-at-arms at practice last night. He has a brand new sword, Hanwei practical, 43 " I think. Like, maybe 3 months of very light usage and he takes good care of it.
He lunges at me, I parry with off hand, and the blade goes right into my right (sword hand) sleeve and stops. I pushed the blade a little too far with my off hand. Pressure from the lunge stopping in the cloth, and some light pressure from the side as I parry it across. The blade makes this wonderful "ping" sound and shatters into four pieces (very similar to other Hanwei breaks I've seen, all flat breaks) wih all breaks from the middle to tip of the blade.
He's contacted the maker about a possible replacement, because these were very innocent conditons and there's no reason a good blade shouldn't put up with that. Most insane thing I've ever seen.
I'll post pictures once I have them. |

Can you file a report on that?
Thanks, William Avacal Regional Marshal |

In fact - such a report is required within 24 hours. If it occurred during an official SCA function.
I am also curious as to where this was purchased from. I have not heard of such a spectacular break on these blades for a good length of time, and this is a bit concerning... |

I'd love to see pictures as well, as a good number of our fencers use these swords.
And just so I'm clear on your description, you parried with your left hand across your body pushing the sword into your right sleeve? |

Ramon - The sword was purchased from Darkwood, it was one of the "economy swords" (darkwood hilt, hanwei blade)
Paul - Yep, that's what he did. |

ooooooooh, classic heat-treat flaw, right there.
You should have NO problem getting a refund or replacement, that's a clear manafacture defect.

| Nice to see that it was a flat clean break. Haven't seen one like this since the first generatation hanwei blades. And I'll bet the fight stopped right away with that break :-) |

| As far as breaks go it was actually kind of cool....I was talking to another fighters and we heard this weird metallic "ping" noise and turned our head to Guillemin & Feargan and you could see each individual peice falling to the ground at different speeds. I swear it was like slow motion, lol |

Is that blade still around? If so can I get my hands on it? I want to try a few tests to validate our assumptions on our armour. We can discuss compensation.

| Good question Cormac, I will ask the owner of the blade if he's still got it, I think he does. Are you by chance making it out our way for Anniversary? |

I could be convinced....
I am thinking about it. I could cancel golden swan, and hit myrganwood anniversary. I assume that the myrganwood anniversary is a good and fun event?

| It's a great event. Thing is, I imagine Hanwei is gonna want the blade is they're gonna give us a refund, so I dunno if you can take it and do your wacky experiments on it... |

As the subject suggests, it was a hanwei blade. I have possession of it right now.
Cheers, Cormac
